More Than A School is a project funded through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF). We work with the Armley Extended Cluster of Schools which consist of; St. Bartholomew's Primary, Castleton Primary, Holy Family Primary, Christ Church Primary and Armley Primary School.
OUR AIMS
We’re attempting to ‘narrow the gap’ between the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of the city. NRF funding aims to address health inequalities through; ‘empower (ing) local people...utilise the role of culture, promote equality, diversity, social inclusion and respect’.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Casey Russell was appointed as Extended Schools & Community worker for the MTAS project. Her role was to consult with community members through schools to address health needs by putting on healthy activities. Casey was responsible for ensuring the activities were promoted and people were accessing the events and activities in schools and the community. Casey Russell has now moved to the role of Training Development worker and MTAS is now in the good hands of our Community Worker & Trainer, Joanne Thorpe.
DELIVERY
Our activities cover a variety of topics which impact on people’s health and wellbeing such as; training courses, food skills, physical activity, mental wellbeing and events and trips. We have provided a range of events and activities throughout schools and community settings in Armley.
ACTIVITIES
The popularity of activities and courses range from setting to setting, stress management and Homeopathy were both been well attended courses. Card making and pamper sessions have both been asked for repeatedly at all schools. Gardening activities are very popular especially in the warmer months. Current activities have also had great feedback from participants such as Tai Chi, Yoga, dance and Lighten Up, Tighten Up.
We are flexible to people’s needs and wants as long as the activities begin to address health inequalities and a few people want to take part. We also aim to leave skills behind in the community through training courses such as First Aid, Food Hygiene and Child Protection; again we are flexible on the course we put on as long as enough people are benefiting.
If you would like any more information on this project please contact Joanne Thorpe (Community Worker/Trainer).
