More Than A School wanted to hold an event which was based around men’s health as hardly any men are contacted through activities or training. As men seemed hard to reach through the schools we decided to work with the children’s centre were it was a neutral ground and was available out of school hours. We set a date for 15th March and started to plan for activities which would attract males and encourage them to come along with their families. We had no idea how the day would go. We advertised through other children’s centres, services, partner organisations, schools, local shops and community groups. We put on activities such as; healthy pizza making and healthy fruit kebabs, bouncy castle, healing and massage, card making, graffiti art, DJ workshop, circus games, football drills and skills and leisure centre equipment and rumble station. We provided refreshments and had a variety of local services for males and families.

We had over 50 men come through our doors many of who brought their families. The day was a great success and we managed to make lots of new contacts for future activities or training. We also were able to give out free prizes as every male who came was entered into a free prize draw for prizes such as; Leeds Rhinos tickets, Leeds Climbing Wall tickets, West Yorkshire Playhouse tickets etc. The day was a great example of effective partnership work with us and Sure Start Armley.
